Internet TV

Last weeks Emmy awards winners included a few you likely missed. And many of the awards reflected the increasing importance of the internet and interactive services.
TiVo won an Emmy for its interactive advertising platform and I bet you immediately think of TiVo and Advertising together in the same sentence. It's part of their schizophrenic existence - making it easier to skip regular commercials but at the same time offering new forms of television advertising.
The-N.com, a television community web site, won it Emmy for its Video Mixer. The N is a night-time network from MTV Networks aimed at teenagers.
DirecTV received an Emmy for innovation in television sports interactivity for its NFL Sunday Ticket service. For those of you that have this service, you see it when watching up to eight games on the screen simultaneously and providing detailed player and team statistics, real-time scores and live updates from other games.
The Slingbox from Sling Media received an award. This little box has single-handedly thrust the word 'placeshifting' into our vocabulary - i.e., redirecting your home television signals for viewing over the internet. Sling co-founder Jason Krikorian said it meant that "the idea of 'placeshifting' has finally arrived". Yeah, right Jason.
The Start Over service received an award for Time Warner Cable in association with Concurrent Computer, Big Band Networks, harmonic and Scientific Atlanta. Start Over allows users to jump to the beginning of selected shows even though they tuned in late.
