Blu-ray DVDs Outsell HD DVD 2-1
According to Home Media Research, Sony's Blu-ray DVDs outsold Toshiba developed, HD DVDs 2-1 in the first nine months of the year. Approximately 2.6 million Blu-ray DVD units sold compared to just 1.4 million HD DVD Discs.
Consumers seem to still be confused by the two different formats and are slow to upgrade their current 480 dpi DVD players to new 1080 dpi HD DVD components.
Although Blu-ray has a 9-month lead advantage, HD DVD is hot on Blu-ray's tail. Exclusive distribution deals with Paramount and DreamWorks Animation for the next 18 months will give HD DVD and consumers a chance to catch up.

I think the only way I’m gonna get a Blu-ray or HD DVD player is by either getting a Sony Playstation 3 or X-Box 360…

Blu-ray will continue to outperform HD-DVD as there are currently Blu-ray burners on the market for the industrial sector. No such beast exists for the HD DVD yet. Until Toshiba gets an HD DVD burner on the market Blu-ray will have the advantage.

Thanks for the comment Mike. I think you’re right. Same thing happend with Beta vs. VHS. Retail sales for blank VHS media went through the roof when the VHS recorder came out.

It’s the studios that support blu-ray that really matters. Even hd-dvd players only sell at $199 at circuitCity, HD DVD can still lose.
