CBS expands its innertube

A few months ago, CBS launched a broadband television channel called innertube. Like the CBS network on television, it provides its shows for free, supported by ads. When I last checked it out, it appeared to me that innertube might as well be renamed the "Big Brother" channel since that show is so prevalently shown.

Now CBS says it will enhance its offerings with "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "CSI: Miami," "CSI: NY," "jericho," "NCIS," "Numb3rs" and "Survivor" all with limited commercial interruption. A CBS spokeswoman says this means fewer ads will run, versus the broadcast network. That tactic is similar to what other TV networks do online.

The shows will be available on innertube the day after their prime-time airing.

CBS already offers 99-cent downloadable episodes of Survivor and is working with Comcast to offer commercial-free video-on-demand episodes of CSI, NCSI, Survivor, and The Amazing Race for 99-cents.

CBS is obviously experimenting to see what works. Which model works best for you – getting VOD for free over the Internet or paying 99¢ and watching it on TV? Come to think of it, maybe setting your DVR up to just record it for later viewing is probably the best answer.
