Cell phone providers, here is a simple business solution

AdAge said it best: "The only thing holding up the explosion of the mobile phone content and advertising business continues to be the lack of interested viewers."

Currently, 20% of all mobile users have video-enabled cell phones. Within that group less than 10% actually access video. So think about that for a second: only 2% of the U.S. consumers access mobile cell phone video.

So, how do you get cell phone viewers interested in using video? Here is a first step: quit charging outrageous fees on top of already high cell phone bills. I think it is time to consider a compact between the viewer and the content that similarly served television well for many decades. That is, give us the content for free and we will suffer through a brief advertisement in exchange.

And here is a second step: put the right content for viewing. While I'm all for choice, let's face facts; the video iPod is all about comedy, drama, and music and the cell phone is all about news and local information. Maybe advanced gizmos like the iPhone will change that, but for now that is how it is.

So there you have it: if the cell phone viewer is interested in news clips and local information and local advertisers want to reach people at the right time in the right vicinity, put them together and give it to me for free.
