Many Americans are opting to buy a new high definition television (HDTV), instead of use their $40 (Forty-dollar), Analog-to-digital converter box coupon provided by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, (U.S. department of Commerce). The digital television transition act is accelerating consumer action to continue receiving television broadcasts before February 17, 2009.
A recent Washington Post article highlights consumers using the digital TV switch as a reason to buy a new television. As a result, electronics recycling centers are getting an influx of analog television drop-offs. A recent Arlington, Texas recycling center received over 16,000 pounds of discarded TVs in one day.
