The digital television transition Act will most likely affect television viewers in the West and the Midwest because they have a higher dependency for antennas to get their broadcast programs. According to a recent study by The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and Consumers Union, reported by the Hollywood Reporter, this same demographic is most likely to have the most trouble when broadcasters switch off their analog signals on Feb. 17, 2009.
The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and Consumers Union's study based on Nielsen Media Research data, determined that Western viewers west of the Mississippi have the highest dependency of antenna broadcasts. Cable television services are also limited in the more rural areas, increasing the level of difficulty for a smooth transition to high-definition television.
