Editing TV Shows down to less than 4 minutes

Filed in archive Business Trends by martino on May 07, 2007

Sony Pictures Television plans to repurpose old TV shows, cutting them down to three and a half to five minutes long for online play. As the president of Sony Television described it to The New York Times:

"So in 'Charlie's Angels,' they have a meeting, Charlie's on the intercomlinks telling them what the assignment is, there are a couple of fights, and then a chase, and they catch the bad guy. Then they're back home wrapping it up."

Sony would like to make more content available in easy to digest forms for phones and streaming video.

I say it's brilliant! Just imagine what could be done if the broadcast networks got a hold of this idea. We could have 3.5 minutes of show and 56.5 minutes of commercials.

But could they actually pull it off? An episode of Smallville might look like this: Kripto-teen does something evil while his/her skin glows with eerie green tint. Clark asks Cloe what is going on; then goes on to visit Lana but refuses to tell her he loves her. Cloe discovers link between Kripto-teen incidents and Luther corp. Lex Luther's plan is thwarted.

Yep. This new format could actually work!
