Michael Bay in Blu-ray fray
Filed in archive Announcements on August 22, 2007
Yesterday, I posted an entry about Paramount and DreamWorks snubbing Sony's Blu-ray and deciding to distribute exclusively with the HD DVD format. Today I read in Variety two interesting follow-ups to that story.
First, they estimate that the financial incentives may have Totaled $150 Million. Yes, you read that right.
Second, Michael Bay (the Director for the movie Transformers) at first hated the HD DVD only decision and threatened to never make Transformers 2. Well, that decision lasted about 12-hours. Here is his mea culpa:
"Last night at dinner I was having dinner with three Blu-ray owners, they were pissed about no 'Transformers' Blu-ray and I drank the Kool-Aid hook, line and sinker. So at 1:30 in the morning I posted - nothing good ever comes out of early a.m. posts mind you - I overreacted. I heard where Paramount is coming from and the future of HD and players that will be close to the $200 mark which is the magic number. I like what I heard.
"As a director, I'm all about people seeing films in the best quality possible, and I saw and heard first-hand people upset about a corporate decision.
"So today I saw '300' on HD, it rocks!
"So I think I might be back on to do Transformers 2!"
All I can say is gotta love that turn-around.

The strings get tighter, studios are now back to controlling the distribution of their product. Directors now face the limited format of 2 hours. Which is fine for some, but when was the last time you saw a film in that time frame and was actually good. Animation is one thing, production cost dictate time length, but are we not sacrificing creative value or story line
