Sprint/Nextel will offer more video content

Sprint/Nextel says it will do exactly what its failed competitors did but end up with different results!

Let's take them at their word: Sprint Nextel will spend $7 billion by 2007 on its fast new Power Vision data network. So what do you do to fill that pipe up with stuff people want? Video, music and data, of course, and Sprint hasn't been shy about signing content deals.

Sprint now has the NFL, among others including E!, CNN, Fox News, and the Weather Channel. Pricing appears to range between an added $15 to $25 per month.

Sprint claims its NFL package offers the widest array of football information for wireless devices. The package, which is significant, includes a 24-hour feed of the NFL Network cable TV channel and what the company promises will be the freshest real-time statistics, scores, video, injury reports, and other updates for the upcoming season.

Is that enough? Likely not. I offer into evidence the story of ESPN Mobile (may it rest in peace).

I don't know if anyone yet has figured out what constitutes a good online video clip. I mean, these screen sizes make the iPod feel like a home theater in comparison. Another problem is that I am not aware of anyone who grew up watching television while holding their arm out in front of their face.

Still, I applaud them for trying.
